Martha Swartz

Martha K. Swartz (Marty) is a professor and a certified pediatric nurse practitioner in primary care, having held joint appointments with Yale New Haven Hospital, Yale Medicine, and Fair Haven Community Health Care in New Haven, Connecticut. Her undergraduate degrees are from Oberlin College and Conservatory and the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Michigan and a doctorate from the University of Connecticut.
At the Yale School of Nursing, Professor Swartz has served as associate dean for Clinical and Community Affairs, chaired the MSN Program, served on the Board of Permanent Officers, and regularly taught courses including “Advanced Health Assessment” and “Health Promotion and Primary Care of Children.” Her research and scholarly interests are regarding the primary care of children with chronic conditions. She has also sung for many years with the Yale Camerata of the Institute of Sacred Music.
She is the recipient of the Virginia Henderson Clinical Scholarship Award, Sigma Theta Tau International, Delta Mu Chapter, a University of Connecticut pre-doctoral fellowship, the Scholarship for Leadership Award (meritorious) from Nurses Educational Funds, Inc., the Alumna Award for Excellence from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University, the Loretta C. Ford Distinguished Practitioner Award from the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Pediatric Health Care from 2008 to 2023 and has also held numerous offices with national professional associations, most recently as secretary of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.
