Sybil Alexandrov

Sybil Alexandrov, Senior Lector II Emerita in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, was raised in Mexicali, Mexico. She received a BA in Romance languages from Stanford University and an MA in Italian literature from Harvard University.

Ms. Alexandrov joined the Yale faculty in 1997. She taught all levels of Spanish language and became a leading advocate for heritage language education. She designed and led Spanish for Heritage Speakers I and II, courses that affirm linguistic and cultural identities while building academic language proficiency. She also spearheaded the Heritage Meets Heritage project, which brings together speakers of diverse heritage languages to share experiences.

A dedicated teacher and institutional citizen, Ms. Alexandrov worked with colleagues in various languages to develop pedagogical material. She served on numerous committees and the Yale Faculty Senate, where she advocated for policy reforms that improved parental leave, professional support, and visibility for instructional faculty. An active Fellow of Jonathan Edwards College, she advises first- and second-year students, supporting their academic and personal development.

Ms. Alexandrov received the Richard H. Brodhead ’68 Prize for Teaching Excellence and the Elga R. Wasserman Courage, Clarity, and Leadership Award.
