Margaret “Peggy” Bia, M.D. ’72, professor emeritus of Internal Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, has been awarded the Weill Cornell Medical College Alumni Association Award of Distinction.
The award, which was established in 1949, is presented each year to a Weill Cornell Medical College alumnus who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in research, education, or patient care and has brought acclaim to the institution. Dr. Bia will be honored on May 17 at the alumni award of distinction dinner and will receive the award May 18 at Weill Cornell Medicine’s 2023 commencement ceremony.
Dr. Bia continues to volunteer teaching medical students and supervising them once or twice monthly in a clinic for underserved patients in New Haven. By the time of her retirement in 2018, she had spent forty years caring for patients with kidney disease, especially those receiving kidney transplants. She has always been involved in teaching medical students, residents, and renal fellows, and after stepping down as medical director of transplant in 2000, she created and served as director of the Clinical Skills program at the School of Medicine until 2014. She has authored more than 110 original articles and book chapters.
